I Just Keep Adding to the List

We got the latest Southern Living at work yesterday and it was really pretty incredible.  They are becoming more like my beloved Cottage Living.  One photo in particular made me take the magazine home and scan it so I could show you a potential project:

First of all, amazing room.  But, this maybe the perfect solution to my 2 story foyer problem.  It is a big expanse of white and a little dull.  And, I have been tempted to put some mirrors or photos going up the stairs, but most things just get lost.  I really wanted to add wainscoting to break up the wall and white a bit, but I promised no major projects... I think that Mr. Hughes would consider cutting many miters to make up the little boxes like we have in the dining room major.  So, I am thinking about adding a picture rail on wall and doing this.  We are going to tack up a piece of molding this week to see if it looks silly just on one wall.  If it does, then I will find a place, either in our powder room or in the upstairs hall.

Then, during my daily blog reading, Little Green Notebook introduced me to Whitewall & Co.  I have been wanting to do wallpaper in a small dose for awhile now.  And, I had considered stenciling, but it seemed so....ehhhh...  Plus, I hadn't seen many I liked and I didn't know if I had the patience to do it.  But, these stencils are really amazing.  Take a look:

And, they have registration marks to make it easy to line up and do the pattern repeat.  So, this will be happening... maybe in the upstairs hall, maybe in our little water closet (knowing my level of patience, it will probably be the water closet.)

I just keep adding to my list...  I did go buy and get the paint for Baby Hughes' bathroom last night and Mr. Hughes found something out in the garage that I had forgotten all about and it is going to be perfect.  But, the pirate towels from PBK won't be in till February and they are one of the really important parts.  So, what are you working on....

  1. great photos! I'm SUPPOSED to be painting the guest bath and here i sit on the computer! I need to turn this sucker off!

  2. That first photo is perfection! I have never looked at Southern Living (being that I do not live in the South?) but you've got me convinced! Can't wait to see what you come up with. :)

ps- I keep contemplating a bit of fun wallpaper in our downstairs bath and Cory won't even hear of it. We have spent too many hours ripping off other people's wallpaper!

  3. loved that room in my new southern living, too!

you are getting me thinking about stenciling....hm.

  4. Finally organized my closet after the mad dash of the holidays, feels oh so much better!

  5. Oh I love the picture wall idea! That photo is really awesome ... I can't wait to see pictures of what you come up with! Great inspiration!

I'm working on some chalkboards for my shop. For some reason, I can't find a paint color that is pleasin' to my eye. Uggghhhh!

  6. there is just too much inspiration out there, makes us want everything..lol

  7. I miss Cottage Living so much. It was one of my favorite magazines. I was using a friend's powder room last week and spotted a 2007 copy in the magazine bin... I really had to fight not to swipe it!
I like the picture rail idea and I have a 2 story foyer that is very blank, as well. But there's really no furniture in my foyer so I wonder if the picture rail would look weird. There wouldn't be much of an anchor at the bottom of the wall.

  8. That will look FABULOUS! I can't wait to see the finished project.

And you know how I feel about wallpaper. Maybe just the focus wall in our Master? Is that dorky?

  9. Great ideas! Especially love the picture wall idea...too cute!

  10. I am right there with you sweetie, I am always adding to the list! I love the wallpaper...I have wanted wall paper for some time, but can't commit ( i have a few commitment issues and this is one of them)...if you do decide to go that direction, please show pics!

  11. I am not a red person but I must say the red wallpaper or stencils looks fantastic in that bedroom.

I'm sure you will come up with something wonderful.

  12. ooh - i love both of these photos/inspiration:) the stencils look just wonderful...in any color. i think it's good that you are loving the one you're with - i think i like it better than the one you looked at!?! happy day.

  13. The stencils is stunning! Plus the bedding has me drooling. what a elegant bedroom! i sure hope to tackle this amazing project and show pictures... then you can hop on a plane and help me :) stencile a wall!!!
I'm tackling my hallway next{fingers crossed} and my kitchen island!!!

  14. Sheesh you've always got something you're working on...how do you do it??!! I adore the idea in the first photo...that could be seriously cool! Love it!

    :) T

  15. Those stencils are gorgeous! I tried to do create a faux wall paper wall in my family using stencils and discovered I'm not THAT detail oriented. Mine of course didn't have a fancy tool to make it easier to line up. Maybe I should try again...

I miss Cottage Living. It was my all time fave magazine. You've got me sold on trying Southern Living. I' picking a copy up tomorrow!

  16. I agree, SL is becoming more like our old CL (which I have every copy of -- I'm a nerd)!! That room is even styled by my fave editor, Heather Chadduck! I also love the idea of the stencils -- let me know if it's worth it -- I've been wanting to do something to my laundry room!

  17. I have plans of using a great wallpaper to create a statement wall in what is currently the "dining room", but that should be a living room. The room is currently a Spicy Brown Mustard on most of the walls and then on the one wall it has this hideous "Prim" wallpaper with equally hideous "Prim" border. Gag.

  18. I love the picture rail as well. I may have to give Southern Living a try again. It was getting a little dated for me, but I've heard it was revamped. Anyway, it sounds like you have some great ideas and great projects going on.

  19. I love the the wallpaper!

  21. Michelle--

I CANNOT tell you how unbelieveably similar we are in terms of our "love the one you're with" homes!! We, too, dream of our forever house one day, but reality for the next 5-7 years is to stay put. (This still doesn't mean I don't check the MLS listings WEEKLY!!)...

    Hugs to you!!!

  22. great ideas! i have a photo wall going up the stairs and i really enjoy it! and we wallpapered one wall in our bedroom! i also thought about stenciling but chickened out! cant wait to see what you do! happy weekend! xo
