Kind of Obsessed

Hello all!  How have you been?  I have been super, super busy lately.  So, once my cell phone contract expired last Saturday I decided to treat myself and get something I have been lusting over for awhile... as in, when they first came out.  An iPhone.  Necessary?  Nope.  Do I love it?  Yep!  I have been playing with Instagram, but I haven't really had a chance to sit and play with this toy like I want.  So, help a girl out!  Give me some tips and what apps and especially what photo apps are the best in your opinion.

I have had some issues posting Instagram photos to facebook... like I have to keep unlinking my account and relinking it, but they post to Instagram just fine. So, what is the deal with that?  I feel like a little bit of a dummy.

Share your wisdom... I know I can look up all the answers, but I want to hear from you.

ps... I think my husband is jealous of Siri *wink*

Essentials~

We have been pretty busy as of late and have been at the shoppe more and more.  Our little shoppe has become our home away from home.  Now, most people would think that working more is less than ideal. I say we have a pretty swell set up... especially on nights like last night.  Last year the Mr. came across a vintage 8 mm projector and has since started collecting little films.  It is a production to get these nights started... loading the film often takes longer than the movie.  It is totally worth it though.  Here are our essentials for a great outdoor movie night~

  • Cook out food... on the cutest little green grill
  • Vintage quilt to soften an old bench
  • Campy movie... if a lady hatches from a dinosaur egg, then you know you have it right.
  • Jar to catch fireflies
  • some Beach Boys tunes
  • Smores.... still debating on whether 1 or 2 jumbo marshmallows make the perfect one
  • Finish off the night with a little guitar music... bonus if baby hughes sings

We are enjoying our summer... work and all!  Hope you are too!

Girlfriends

One of the best things that I have encountered while blogging isn't the endless inspiration.  It isn't the handy cleaning tips.  It is the friendships.  I have made quite a few long distance close friendships.... some of you I talk to more often than my mother... and that is quite a bit!  A few years ago.. I think it has been that long.... I got a comment or an email from a reader that figured out she lived in the same town that I did.  We emailed back and forth and became Facebook friends and quickly realized that we had a lot in common... from movies, to decor, to reading material.  This girl and I were cut from the same cloth. The first night we met *for real* was while we were standing in line at Starbucks to caffeine up for a midnight showing of New Moon.

I can't say enough good things about this girl.  She is one of the most non-judgmental people I have met. She is so positive and easy going.  She is a great mother and a wonderful friend.  She has constantly been one of my biggest cheerleaders for my little business and I know I can always bounce ideas off of her.  She loves my son and he adores her (and her boys!)

I have known this day was coming for the past few months.  Her husband got a job in Alabama and they put their house on the market.  Earlier this month, they found a buyer and they moved on Sunday.  I am so glad that they did get an offer, as I can only imagine how hard it has been to have a long- distance marriage.  Now, I know that we will keep in touch... I am just going to miss planning pedis and having her less than 5 minutes away.

So love your girlfriends, near and far... ones you have met and ones you have yet to meet.  They are so very important and special.  And, for my friend who moved away... you are dearly missed already.  Text me your paint colors *wink*

~Redecorate our living room... maybe a new wall color...some new pillows... no big woop...

~Fun 4th Birthday Party...possibly a superhero theme...

~Wear more dresses

~Actually start the sampler I bought this year

~Read more books... there are a few that I can't wait for them to come out

~And, watch more movies... I can barely wait until November, but at least there are a few that I am looking forward to coming out before then

~Be outside more and enjoy it and soak it up before it becomes miserably hot

~Discover new music and see some live shows

~ Take some mini family vacations

I have so much to be thankful for.... 2011 brought me home with my little guy and then we expanded Vintage Junky.  I have B I G plans for 2012 and so many things to be excited about...my sis is graduating with a degree in nursing (so proud!) and some friends are getting married too.

I will be back soon with a fun giveaway!  But for now, Happy New Year!

bye for now!

Genuine~

hello all!  how are you today?  how am I? Let's see... I am 33.  Yikes!  Where have my years gone?  I don't enjoy wrinkles or a less than 20 bum, but I have always liked birthdays.  And I think I sort of look at them a bit differently.  Just like my true Mother's Day doesn't happen in the middle of May.  My Mother's Day happens at the beginning of sweltering August when baby hughes was born.  I sort of look at my birthdays as my New Year.  I think if you think on it, you might too.  It is the beginning of your New Year, your next one.  You have 365 days behind you of good memories and 365 before you of a blank slate.  365 days to be what you want to be.  Now, I am realistic, I am 33 and NASA stopped the big Space Program so I am not going to be an astronaut.  And, I am never going to have a wonderful singing voice or be 5'10." Many people choose a word on January 1st that they want to define their year, so here is mine *Genuine*

First off, doesn't it have a lovely ring to it?  I love the word!  And, up to this day, I have strived to be just that, genuine, even though I never really put it into thoughts or words.  I think it is the best way to be.  Am always successful?  Nope.  I do try though.  So, what do I mean by being *genuine*  I guess it just boils down to being yourself.... good and bad.  Recognizing your faults (ugh!) and try to do more good than harm.  For instance, I know that I am a sponge.... I am so affected by other's moods.  So, I try to surround myself with positive, happy people.  Deep down, I am a happy person even if I let foul moods affect mine.

yes, I own this shirt... maybe I will wear it today... found here

This New Year, I want to be the best, most genuine Michelle I can be.  Extra silly, sort of clumsy, off key singer, Harry Potter reader, absent minded, loud talker.   I want this word to define me for the next year.  I want people to know what they mean to me.  I want to be a better mom and wife and friend and daughter and sister.

I look back over all the changes that have occurred in the past 365 days and all the possibilities that lie ahead in the next 365.  I would like to think that I didn't get here by being who people want me to be, but by being myself, in the best way I can.  This next year, I am going to own this word.

Thanks to all of you for all of your wonderful support over this past year.  It has been one of the best... but I always say that *wink*  I will be back soon with some Christmas decor... but today, I am going to enjoy my cupcake.

bye for now!

in true Michelle fashion. I drug the 1st image from somewhere in the depths of pinterest instead of pinning it... maybe it wasn't working properly.  So, I am taking a long way to say, I don't know exactly where it came from.  Let me know if you know and I will give credit to the source!

What are you doing over here all by yourself...

You think my pick up line is lame?  Hmm... seems to work for baby hughes with all the little girls at church.  I guess we are way past the pick up lines by now. Has it been a year already?  Hard to believe.  I am glad you are here.  I always am.  I have to be honest though.... you have looked better.  You sort of look like August and let's be honest.... she is a bit intense.  I mean, look at how she left the place... a mess with baby hughes sick.  Just like her.  But, you... you are laid back, yet you always keep me surprised.  Are you still upset that I flirted around with Spring and Summer?  You have nothing to worry about.  You and I both know that nothing can replace you in my heart.  You are only here for 30 short days every year, but each year you bring the best of things.  Remember that one year when you brought Mr. Hughes with you?  That was the best.  We have the best time together... remember those picnics and driving with the windows down?  So, what do you want to do while you are here... I know, I know... I planned something in the middle of the month, but we can work around that.  The whole month is ahead of us... we can do anything... picnics...cookouts.... I may even be able to arrange a little road trip, just the 2 of us.  Who am I kidding... the baby and the Mr. will want to tag along.  It is okay though.  They are our kind of people.  You bring the crisp nights and the jackets and I will try to not to plan so many projects and just enjoy you while you are here.  Look, I even painted my toes a pretty grey to celebrate your coming. Okay, let me try to clean up this mess that August left here and you get to work on the cooler temps and let's meet back here for a great September cookout, okay?

Yours Always,

The End

That's right.  I am one of those that will be staying up extra late to experience it first.  And, it is a date night too.  My wonderful sister will come to watch (or sleep next to) baby hughes.  So, to all of you guys out there who will be mourning this last movie, I raise a frosty mug of butterbeer to you!  There is still time to enter my giveaway!!  I have gotten some great names so far!!

bye for now!

Name Game Giveaway

Hello and Happy Wednesday!  I just put a coat of primer on the last one on my new dining room chairs!  The fabric came yesterday, so I hope to do a little reveal on Monday at the latest. Hey... I am realistic.  I get easily distracted.  So, while they could be finished tomorrow, they probably won't.  As I was putting the finishing touches on some other pieces that will go to the booths this week, I thought it would be a little fun to have a giveaway where YOU name a piece.  And I will give you your choice of a

Mimi Tote Bag constructed from scraps of vintage grain sacks

Or a Bemis Vintage Grain Sack pillow

Here are the rules... You just have to post a name you like... This isn't a random giveaway.  I will (with the Mr's help) choose a name.  I won't show the piece... I want to see what name I think fits her best.  I will tell you that she is a china cabinet.  And she is a pale grey (surprise, surprise.)  And, I have a leaning towards vintage-y sounding names.  And, it can't be a name that I have already used.  Here is a link to some names that I have used... but it isn't a complete list.  So, if you choose a one that I have used, I will comment back within the comment section and let you know.  Please also check and make sure no one before you suggested the same name.  And, only one entry.  So give me your best!  I need the name by Friday morning, so this will be a quick little giveaway.  I will announce the winner on Monday with a photo of the piece.

I want to take this time right now at to tell you how grateful I am for all of your encouraging comments and every bit of your support.  I love doing what I am doing now.  I have been painting furniture for awhile... since I was in high school ( a long, long time ago.)  I am sure my mother has one of my first pieces still... with layers (hand painted sunflowers under crackle paint under whatever it is now... gasp... crackle paint!)  I don't do this as a hobby.  It is a passion of mine.  Some people paint on canvas, I paint furniture.  It isn't something that the Mr. likes for me to do to get me out of his hair.  He supports me every step of the way.  I don't say this to act like I invented painting furniture or that I have been doing this longer than anyone else, but to let you know how extremely blessed I feel to be doing what I love, finally.  I know that this painted furniture trend may not last forever. And, that I may not be able to make money at it forever.  I would be painting furniture regardless of me selling it.  But, then we would probably be on hoarders.  So thank you  and now, give my piece a name!

bye for now!

Just For Me

Hello Everyone!  We have had some rainy weather here in Tennessee lately.  So I have taken advantage of the inside time today to work on some things just for me.  I haven't painted anything for us in so long.  So, I woke up early and started painting these chairs:

I got three primed and painted by the time baby hughes' nap was over.  You may remember me asking you to help me beg Mr. Hughes to keep these beauties.  He caved (those were his words!)  I am just waiting on some fabric swatches to get here so we can recover these babies.

And, you may remember me asking your opinion on me tackling embroidery and some pointers.  Last night, I pulled out some linen and some floss and got started following some great online tutorials that I found here.

By no means is it perfect, but this is my first try.  Already my lazy daisy stitches are less lazy.  So I am going to practice, practice, practice over the next few days and then I will order the sampler that I have been obsessing over.  If any of you have any tips for a beginner, please feel free to share.  And if any of you are beginners as well, I would love to know what you are working on.  I really like it.... it is quite relaxing, but not mind numbing like watching television.  I am going to start a little embroidery project for Hazel tonight too.

And this is something I made just for me a few weeks ago, but I decided to list them on etsy and sell them local as well:

I embellished one of my grain sack totes with a garland of linen flowers with vintage button centers.  It has been hauling all of my stuff along with baby hughes' stuff too this summer.  I plan to use it tomorrow to smuggle some snacks that you can't get at the theatre when we go see Cars 2.  But we will have popcorn, oh yes, you can't go to your very first movie and NOT eat popcorn.

And this random photo... well, it is just for me too.  This is one of my favorite things in our crazy backyard.  Old, moss covered bricks.  Heck, I even like the little mini weeds coming up.
Okay kids, I have done enough just for me... got to pick up this crazy crayon and car strewn living room.

bye for now~

He gets me

Hello everybody!  Hope you guys had a great weekend!
We didn't get a chance to work on Hazel as much as we wanted, but I hope to get her here this week to wash her and work on some things.  I did pick up some yellow paint to give her a little splashy stripe though.  We really love her.  I can't wait to get started.  And, to think, she wouldn't be with us if it weren't for Mr. Hughes.

I have talked about him being my cheerleader and my best friend, but the guy really gets me.  And we feed off each other... wait.. that sounds kind of gross.  You know what I mean though, right?  I really wanted a vintage camper, so he went and found me one.  He went and checked it all out.  He is all for me fixing that girl up and doing stuff with her.  Not only does he help me follow my dreams, but he adds to them.  The man is full of great ideas.  Some of them I am not always on board with, just like he thinks that some of mine are off the wall.  One of his latest great ideas for Miss Hazel?  Showing 8 mm movies on the side of her... he happened upon a projector the other day and got it working.  He bought an old reel at the flea market to test it out and it works.

It is just little things like this that I just know.  We were meant to be, as cheesy as that can sound.  If I would have ended up with anyone else, I probably wouldn't be doing what I am doing... I wouldn't be who I am.  I think that is what the perfect match is... it is imperfect.  But that person brings out the best in you (most of the time *wink*)  That person lets you be who you are.  Sometimes it is so hard living with another creative soul.  The messes in this place can be completely out of control.  And the hours we keep can be wacky.  I wouldn't trade it for anything though.  I love our little life.

After a long day of moving furniture to and from booths and storage units, before he did anything else, he downloaded and emailed me this:

A beauty shot of Hazel in her before state at our friends' place.  Doesn't she look so happy out there with the hay bales in the distance and enjoying a great sunset?  So, Mr. Hughes, if you are reading (and you probably are!) Here's to you.  I love you for sharing and making my dreams better than I could have imagined.

bye for now~

Single Girl Sheets

It is a rare quiet time at our house... the Mr and baby are still asleep and I am enjoying a cloudy day on the back deck, hoping that it won't rain just yet.
As I was folding the mountain of laundry last night (even with more time at home, the laundry is still a mountain.) I started folding these sheets... we must have used them recently to cover some furniture or to "build a house."  And I started pondering all the meaning behind these happy, girly sheets.
You see, these are my single girl sheets.  These are the sheets I slept on most nights with my beloved puppy before the Mr. came along.  These sheets are the ones I slept on when I had little more responsibility than to pay my rent and show up to work on time.  I slept on them when I came home from nights out with my friends.  I slept on them when some silly crush hurt my feelings.  I slept on them happy and sad.

It has been 5 years today since those were my single girl sheets.  And I love them and all they represent to me..... mainly being able to have loud, girly sheets
 *wink*
But, I don't miss them at all.  I am completely happy sleeping on my soft, boring white, 32 year old sheets (me, not my sheets) with my Mr. Hughes, happy.  I am happy those sheets are in the closet waiting to be pulled out to make a house over the dining room table.  I do think it is important that married girls remember their single days and be happy for where it has brought them.  And, it is important for single girls to enjoy that carefree, spending every dime on new shoes because you can phase.  And, it is important to keep a little pink when you live in a house full of boys.

So, every now and then open up your linen closet or your scrapbook or your suitcase full of single girl memories and then go give your love a squeeze.
Happy 5 years Mr. Hughes...

bye for now!

Remember the Compliments

When I was in college, my aunt emailed me an email forward, you know, one of those really feel good ones.  Ones with things like "there are at least 5 people that you mean the world to."
And there was this one piece of wisdom, remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults."  And even though I have received the same list of wisdom several times since then, I can remember exactly where I was when I first read it.  It really appealed to me....I have always been a glass half full type girl, so this was right up my alley.

And I do remember the compliments... like my senior year in creative writing.  We were each given a name of someone in the class and had to write a little speech to them and give them a little gift... sort of the opposite of a roast.  We had to keep our person a secret.  And I can honestly tell you, I don't remember who I had or what I said about them....that makes me feel sort of bad.  But, I remember the person who had my name and what he said.  I went the whole day, heck probably the whole week feeling so great.  He gave me a bag of Hershey's chocolate bars...the mixed bag... and said that I had a little something for everyone and he made me a little sign... I think it said that I was awesome or the bomb.  And that has always stuck with me whenever I get less than positivity from people.

I also remember when I worked for Pottery Barn Kids and each month the staff elected a Catch the Spirit winner... I guess it is sort of like employee of the month... you got your photo taken and it was put on a poster.  But the best thing that I got from it (I won twice) was all the nice little notes people wrote to nominate me... especially ones from people who I didn't think cared for me much.

So there is something inside of me... either self-centeredness or optimism that makes me hang on to all that affirmation.  Remembering the compliments is the easy part.
Forgetting the insults is what is hard.
Sometimes though, those insults drive you to to be better... or at least me.
I had a hard time when I first started college.  I went from making great grades in high school, grades that helped me get scholarships, to making not so hot grades.
You see, I didn't go to class that much.  Not that I was partying, I was working part time.  I was just of the mindset that if I could make good grades and not attend class that should be enough.
Too bad my professors weren't of that mindset as well.  They wanted me to be there.  They counted off when I wasn't.  And, so my grades started falling... fast.   And this went on for about 3 semesters.  Until one day, I had to give a presentation on a vacation home that I designed (my major was Housing and Design.) I gave the presentation.  I knew all the technical stuff was correct.  And, I felt great about the creativity that I put in the project and my presentation.  So, when I went in for my evaluation with my professor, and she said that I had an A project, but that she would only give me a C.
I remember my face getting hot.
Then she gave me the worst insult I have received ever....

"You are a waste of talent."

I started crying right then and there.  She also told me that I might as well just start working full- time if I wasn't going to come to class.
I was mad and humiliated.  Here was a woman who talked about her disabled son during our lectures... and used a notsonice word when she did.  Here was a woman who mainly talked to a woman that was her age that was auditing the class... she wasn't even there to get a grade..... and they talked about nonsense.  This woman wasn't teaching us.... where did she get off telling me that I was a waste of talent?
I went home and called the manager of the boutique that I worked and begged her for a full time position.  There were none available.  So, I decided I had no other choice.  I would have to stay in school and work my way through.
But, that isn't all.
I would bring my grades up and show her... we will call her Dr. R.
And I did.  I ended up graduating with a pretty high GPA considering that Dr. R gave me a D for not coming to class.  I only wish she wouldn't have transferred to another school before I graduated.... I thought about sending her a copy of my diploma.  But, maybe that is what she wanted all along... maybe she could see that I had enough drive to prove her wrong.
Other times when people have insulted me, either intentionally or accidentally, I have felt that similar drive to prove them wrong.

So, maybe we don't need to forget the insults... maybe we just need to prove the insulter wrong.  Maybe we need to be half- full as much as we can be to tick those half- empty people off!

So, here I would like to thank both Jake from high school and Dr. R from college for teaching me the importance of the line from an email forward from long ago.

What about you... is there an insult that made you better yourself?  Can you easily remember all the nice things and forget the notsonice?

Have a rosy outlook kind of day!

bye for now!

My Last Day

Hello all.
Today is it.  My last day of work.
I have been at the same job for 6 years.
Next week I start my new job with my new boss... he is a talker.  And cute.
And blondes aren't usually my type.
*wink*
Still excited.scared.nervous.happy.

Last week I got a surprise.  Mr. Hughes brought home a bunch of furniture for me to paint and a surprise.
He called it my Happy Last Day of Work Present (a week early.)
You may remember me lusting after a certain item in this post.
Well, I think it looks much, much better in my dining room.

Don't you think?  And you also must think that I am spoiled.  And that Mr. Hughes is dreamy and considerate.  And I would have to agree with all those things.
You should also know that our anniversary is in a few weeks and this is for that too.
So I am not totally spoiled.  Just like 75%

I have been wanting a Swedish clock for awhile (I am not sure if this is considered a "Mora)
This one is from 1790 and has the maker's signature on the back ... Hermann Hoffstred along with a piece of paper from a Stockholm newspaper.
It doesn't work... just stands there and looks pretty.
And what a great looking face!  I haven't seen one on the few Swedish Clocks that I have seen.

Okay kids... I am out of here to go to my last few hours of paid labor!

bye for now!

Organizing My Thoughts

hello there!  How are you?
My head is so full of *stuff*
Are you ready? Here we go!
  • See the above photo.  That is straight out of the camera... did you have any doubt? heehee Anyhow, my peonies have exploded this week.  I feel a strange pride that I planted them from tubers and that they have flourished enough for me to cut them and bring them inside.  I love fresh flowers and the selection at the Kroger is unsatisfying.  Plus, these are free.  I am wondering if there is any reason I shouldn't be cutting them all and bringing them in though.
  • Have you ever had so much to do and things you want to do, so you decide to do nothing?  I really mean, nothing... except fold laundry and get lost in pinterest? Okay, I believe there was also some bubble blowing and a trip to Target and a walk, but really nothing that needed to be done.  And, you know, I am started to wonder if lazy is my true nature and that it is coming out now.  Not worried, mind you.  Just wondering.
  • I am also wondering what my "schedule" is going to look like when I am at home all the time. I am laughing inside because while I like to plan things like birthday parties months (ahem... years) in advance, we aren't really scheduled.  We will be in big trouble when the hyena starts school, as I hear they encourage school age children to be on a schedule.  Right now, we are rolling with it.

  •  Are you wondering if anything has made me question my decision to live frugally and not have a job? Well, true to form, it would be the clock above.  Gorgeous.  Love it.  I could work 2 more weeks and afford it.  That is assuming that the Mr. would let me spend that entire paycheck on it.  It is Swedish and while it isn't a true Mora, I love it all the same.  It is different and has a lovely face.  I did mention that the traditional gift for 5 year anniversaries is a clock. (Back me up here, ladies!)  I know that it isn't really, but it didn't stop me from saying it. Oh well, being with my bambino is better.  And just so you know, I consider true friendship anyone who is willing to scheme with me on how to fulfill my vintage cravings.
  • As of Mother's Day, I am a proud owner of a Kindle.  Now, I did tell Mr. Hughes that letting me quit the full time gig was enough of a present, but he went above and beyond and got me one.  Which makes me think he wants me to ignore him and get lost in book after book?  Not only did he get me a Kindle, but he also bought a cute case off of etsy.  And, just so you know, I consider a mark of a great spouse to know that the cute cover is just as important as the technology... and that I like my margaritas with extra, extra salt.
  • I recently wrote an article for Busy Bee Trader (page 32, if you want to read.) I gave parenting advice.....hahhaa.... from me?  The unscheduled mom?  Well, I gave some tips on how to antique with a 2 year old.  And in the weeks since I have written that article, baby hughes has really tried to prove me wrong.  I wonder if he can read.
  • And, speaking of the hyena, he is turning out to be almost everything that I wished for... almost. Does that sound too mean... let me finish.  Before he was born, before I even knew he was a he, I wrote down some wishes for him.  Like that I hoped he would be friendly... the type of child that will befriend the new kid in class. I prayed that he would be confident.  He will walk boldly up to child or adult and introduce himself with confidence. That he would be a lover of animals... he is a regular St. Francis, actually petting a baby bird last summer. And, most important than any other traits, I wished he would be positive and funny and happy. And he is.  However, I neglected to put on that list.... not scared of riding in a wagon... or swinging... or sliding... My child is fearless when it comes to sticking things in outlets and running into the street (I promise, I watch him, he is just FAST!) When it comes to the playground, he prefers to just talk to people. When I try to put him in a wagon, he screams and wants to pull it.  And I can roll with it. My only concern is that I like to ride rides and the Mr. doesn't.  I was sincerely hoping that with such a tall, bold child that I would soon have a partner in crime at amusement parks.  It isn't looking good.
  • Just to give you another little insight on baby hughes and my wonderful parenting skills...let me preclude this by saying that we are mostly careful about what we watch in front of him.  Case in point, no guns.  Last week at the park, baby hughes was playing with his friend and they both had sticks.  His friend had a "gun" and baby hughes tried to "disarm" him with his "wand" shouting something that sounds a lot like Exspelliarmus.  I told him that I sincerely hoped for his sake that magic works faster than bullets.  Now, before you think I am on my high horse with "no guns" I can assure you pro-gun mommas that he will have water guns when he is older.  I can also tell you that I laughed about the difference between the boys with my friend.  And I can also give you this nugget to make you feel superior to me in parenting strategy.  Have you ever seen 500 Days of Summer?  You know the part where they are picnicking in the park and they take turns saying a certain  word, gradually getting louder each time?  Well, last Sunday at CHURCH, the little man thought it was a good time to recall the word and say it louder. And louder. Now, mind you, I know that word is fine in the proper setting... like a medical office. We just are not that ultra hip family that uses the proper terms of anatomy. And half of me was proud of him that he instinctively knew the best time to use such a phrase for maximum comic impact. The other half of me that worries about listeria and brown recluses, well, that half was mortified.
Well, that is all folks. I will be back soon with a less wordy, less insightful post!!

bye for now!

My Great Big Leap

Okay, let's see if I can focus on writing a coherent post.
Where to begin.... hmmm....
Well, I will just say it.
I quit my job.  I handed in my notice today.
ahhhhh!!!!

I don't think I can express how excited or nervous or anything that I am.
This is a huge leap for me. For us.  My little family.
I have had this rope tugging me for awhile now.  One end on my heart and the other firmly anchored at home... with the baby and the Mr.
I never fancied myself a SAHM.  But, when that little surprised face looked up at me nearly 3 years ago, everything changed.  I knew it.  This is where I was meant to be.
But, I went back to work.  Because we needed my income. We still do.
Everyone assured me it would get easier to leave my boy.
It hasn't.
I have been extremely blessed to have a work at home husband (WAHH)
So, I have never had to leave baby hughes with strangers at a young age (not that there is anything wrong with that.)

And, I will be the first to admit, that while my husband is great... husband and father, I have been insanely jealous of him.  I hate missing anything.  I have always be acutely aware that I only get so much of the kid time before this  hyena grows up.  And, even though my hours at work are wonderful, I just hated knowing I was missing anything.   Like little firsts and big firsts.  I am still not convinced that I saw his first steps... just things like that.

So, after Mr. Hughes crunched and crunched some numbers, he told me that we could do it.  We just can't spend any money for the next 16 years.  I kid.  But it will be tight.  And so worth it. Have I mentioned that my hubs is self-employed?  And even though he has been for 10 years, my income just made me feel safe.  And I am scared.  I know that I can go out and get another job, but now that I have this nugget of goodness in my grasp, I just don't want to give it up.

I have prayed and prayed about this.  Mainly because I feel a little bit guilty.  My job and income have been such a blessing. I have been with this orthodontic practice for 6 years.  I work with some really great people... ones that I really hope to stay in touch with.  I don't think I could have a more flexible, wonderful boss or better hours.  And in this economy, people are losing their jobs right and left.  And here I am throwing a wonderful job away, even if my intentions are 100% noble.

But they aren't.
I would be lying if I didn't also have selfish reasons for doing this.  While I will be mainly focused on baby hughes and doing all the magical mommy things like potty training and cleaning toilets and remounting curtain rods that have been ripped out of the wall (no joke) I am aware that I will have more time for Vintage Junky.  And that I can help contribute money to our budget in doing something I adore.  I have felt so overwhelmed at times... like I just want to give up the business all together since I couldn't throw everything at it.  So, I am hoping that naptimes will allow me to work on my business a bit more.
I am also hoping that Mr. Hughes won't have to keep such crazy hours... let's face it.  I have a wild kid that makes a bit of noise.... okay.. a LOT of noise.  I am also hoping for a cleaner house.  That is a lot of hoping, isn't it?

I couldn't do all this without the amazing support from my friends and my family and coworkers.  I am like a sponge and feared telling anyone our tentative plans in case they had something negative to say... something I didn't want to hear.  I didn't want to second guess our decision or even hear a what if.  I only wanted to soak up the woohoos!  and Awesomes!

So to sum up this very wordy post:
I Quit. Scared. Excited. Happy.

and isn't Happy the most important?

bye for now!

oh, and I purchased the sweet print here to celebrate our new path.

Whirled

Hello and happy Tuesday!

We had a wonderful weekend... movie with a girlfriend (Water for Elephants was great!)
Then a great little festival and visited with the same girlfriend and her family. Lots of pretty weather, loads of outside time.
That stuff is good for my soul.

I have to be honest with you though.  I am feeling a little whirled.
I am in between some places and it is making me feel a bit overwhelmed.  I feel like I am not completely present for anything.  Like I am half doing things.
My head is a bit of a mess even though decisions have been made and there is a plan in place.
But, since those decisions haven't been announced yet, it is weighing me down.

Am I being cryptic enough for you? heehee!

I have so many things to share with you all.  Some big, exciting things.
But, you will have to bear with me one more day before I spill the beans so to speak.

bye for now!
