The Table that Needed It...

Hello and happy Thursday!!  The best day of the week!  I am off to the shoppe in just a bit, but I thought I would show you a piece that I just finished for the house.  Here is what it looked like before....

Can you see it... it is also before I knew how to make my photos larger, heehee!  Anyhow, it looked nice with its original black finish, but that was before the accidents with fabric glue and the scrubbing pad to get off said fabric glue.  We use this table quite a bit.  There is usually stuff all over it.  So, I had taken to covering it up with a table cloth.  Then I got a wild hair to paint it my Vintage Map. (edited to add... Vintage Map is a color from my Favorite Colors pallet and it is custom :)  I do use all Benjamin Moore paints though.  They may have one named Vintage Map, but I have never checked.  It is a pale, pale aqua.)

And, it brightened up the whole space!  I have been changing quite a few things up downstairs and this is a fresh little change.  I still love the black finish that was on it, but it needed to be painted.  And, if I am going to paint something, I want to see a change.

The table isn't even old.  I think we bought it at Target about 6 years ago.  But, from what I can tell, it is a solid wood piece.  I have even toyed around with the idea of painting it seasonally... sort of like how JCrew repaints their windows every time they change them.  The Mr. probably wouldn't like me rolling it out on the deck to work on it every few months.  I still love my metal navy chair knockoffs (Kmart yeeeaarrrsss ago) but I am wondering if I would like something different.  They are a breeze to clean though!

Okay, I am off to go clip some more peonies to take to the shoppe with us today!  My bushes have been on fire!!  Sure beats having to drive 30 minutes to a store that carries them.

Oh, and a quick question for all you people who know what you are doing out in the garden... am I right to think that if I move 2 of my peony plants this fall they won't produce next year?  They are being crowded where they are now and I would rather not have to dig up 2 evergreen bushes to give them room.

Be back soon... I framed my sampler!

bye for now~

  1. That turned out wonderfully! And I can see how it brightened up the space. Great technique - just the right amount of "distressing", in my opinion.

Re. the peonies: I belong to the Know-Nothing party. I'm just elated that our lone bush has 4 buds about to flower on it!

  2. Oh I love it, we have a table in our kitchen we are thinking to paint it over with white. We have no time these days but surely we'll get it done because it does lighten up the place! Nice post.

  3. I love it!! That color reminds me a lot of my dining room table. And it is in the same shape yours was before - lots of stuff has happened to the top of it. paint, markers, glue, I've been thinking about repainting just the top - if I can come up with a color that will work with the rest of the table.
I LOVE your chairs! Wish I could buy them from you if you decide to get rid of them!

  4. Michelle,
Your table looks vintage and compliments the rest of your decor. I wish we were neighbors because whenever you got an urge to paint I would invite you over, hand you a brush and say go to it! :)
I know a little something about peonies:

Unfortunately, you will have to be patient through a few growing seasons for those fragrant peony blooms.

  5. So pretty, Michelle! Is Vintage map the name of the paint color? I am no peony expert, but when I have tried to move them, my great aunt always told me to be careful not to plant them too deep. I'm done advising now.

  6. Love the "old" new table. It looks great with the metal chairs, and of course, the peonies.

  7. Love it Michelle....it does look fresher in the lighter color...who is the paint color by it is lovely.

I love those chairs and Im shocked theyre knock off's from chain store. See it just goes to show how vintage lovers can mix new and old and let everyone try and figure out what's what.

As always thank you so much for sharing and inspiring!

  8. Looks beautiful! I would LOVE to have that as my dining room table {or have a dining room table at all -- we live in a very small apartment!}.

    Thanks for sharing!

  9. I have the same question about the paint color...is the name "Vintage Map" and who makes it(Benjamin Moore,Pratt)? When I started reading this post, I thought you meant you were going to decoupage the top of the table with a vintage map, and thought, "What a cool idea!" Your table turned out beautifully...not solid white or cream...looks almost stained grey...I think galvanized metal Tolix cafe chairs would look amazing with it! I still think the decoupage map idea would look cool on a small side table in a study or as a night table in a boy's room...I might try it myself on a little table I picked up at a garage sale...I love all your projects!!

    1. Hi Mary Frances (beautiful name, by the way!) The paint color is from a pallet I created of my favorite colors and it is custom :) I do use Benjamin Moore paints though. I love the Tolix chairs, but they aren't in my price range right now. The color is actually a pale, pale aqua, but with the sun coming through and the paint on the walls it looks different at different times of the day.
      Have a lovely day!

  10. Hi Michelle! I'm an avid gardener and have experience with growing peonies on both coasts! It is true that they do not like to be moved once they have settled in, so I would make your decision carefully. Peonies are notoriously fussy about their location, sun and soil, and if they are thriving where they are at, I'd think more about moving what's around them. That's what I've done here in my front garden - the builder had planted three peonies (amazingly) surrounded by all other kinds of shrubs. Everything else has been dug out, removed or transplanted, and the peonies have bloomed beautifully for 15 years!

    1. Hi! Thanks so much for the sweet comment. The color was one from Lowe's like 6 years ago. I don't remember the company... I think it was an Eddie Bauer or something that they offered at the time. It is called Dried Hydrangea though. I am not sure if they still carry it. Hope this helps!

  12. Love the color of the table and also the idea of changing it with the seasons . . . why don't men understand these things?? As for the Peonies, I have three bushes and all three are on different sides of my house and are doing well in different settings. I have divided them, moved them, you name it and each year they bloom. Now this is coming from someone who is notoriously bad at growing things so I'd say go for it!

  13. Love the table color. Much softer and calmer. We have used that shade on several furniture pieces in the vintage store where I volunteer. Did you use paste wax over the paint and sanded table?
