In the Meantime

In the spirit of loving the one I am with (still can't get that house out of my mind though) I thought I would share with you some plans for the less desirable parts of our  home.  The downstairs is finished except for the tweaking and fluffing that I do on a daily basis.  I decided to nix the dream for turning our pantry into a Butler's Pantry... 1. Because this isn't going to be our Forever Home 2. Baby Hughes will totally get into much, much more trouble with my design.  So, that leaves the upstairs.  And, I have agreed that I won't do any major home improvements (tile, ripping out our shower and tub, etc) if The Plan has a 5 year projected date, rather than 7-10.  But, I can paint! And, I will....

So, moving upstairs....

This is our staircase with the nasty builder grade carpet.  It gets ALOT of traffic every day and is so not pretty after 3 and a half years.  In fact, all the carpet is matted and old looking.  So, we are going to rip this up and put down wood.  I am also going to paint the rail and posts white.   Here is the runner we are going to use

It is from Dash and Albert... I adore their rugs.  I have them in front of all the doors. They wash and wear so well... not getting paid to give you this info, just letting you know.  You can't go wrong with them.  This one is the Vanilla Sky but the Margarita Stripe graces the downstairs in a few places.  I am even thinking about getting a huge one to attempt to cover up the nasty carpet in our bedroom. (Just so you know, the nastiness is limited to matting... not REALLY nasty stuff.)  I hope to get this project started soon since I hate, hate, hate the carpet.  Then, the 2 rooms upstairs that are not the cutest are Baby Hughes' bathroom and the laundry room.

Here is the laundry.  Boring.  Mr. Hughes' least favorite room due to the bore factor.  My plan for this room is paint and possibly changing out the wire shelves with some wooden shelves with brackets... not sure if that is in the guidelines set by the Mr. or not. I am thinking a light blue or grey... whatever looks better with this:

A vintage swing arm clothes drying rack.   And this:

is something that I am working with.  I love my Housekeepers box even though she hasn't been here in ages...

So, I ordered this:

Cute huh?  I adore etsy... this is from City Chic Country Mouse.

So, moving on...

This is Baby Hughes' bathroom.  ehhh.  I love the shower curtain, will probably never part with it, but it just isn't boy.  And, I am not so much on themes and what not, but this room needs a lift. I have always wanted something a little beachy because of the beachy watercolor that we got on our honeymoon in St. Martin.   And, I decided what to do when I saw this:

We like pirates here.  Adorable, but too pricy for a shower curtain when I also must have these:

Or these:

Now Pottery Barn Kids isn't paying me either, they used to though.... gosh if I still had that discount then this wouldn't be an issue.  I need to decide between the 2 sets...

So, I ordered this:

It is a classic and will keep it from being pirate overkill.  I will probably paint the walls a pale beachy blue and the cabinets will be painted white.  And, I will probably get Mr. Hughes to add some trim around the mirror.  And, some new rugs.

Now, I just need to figure with towels to choose.

So, this should keep me busy for awhile... maybe take my mind off a certain house...

  2. I can't wait to see the bathroom after you're done with it! And the laundry room!! My laundry room is so yucky right now. Really nasty. I've waited for 8.5 years for it's number to be called up on the project list and the time has finally come! Jan. 23 cannot come soon enough!!

  3. You are so ambitious! I can't wait to see your laundry room. There were some great ones in the Southern Living idea houses this year.

  4. Great pick on the shower curtain! SO classic - you could do a million different things with that. And I love my light blue/green/grey color in our kitchen and mudroom/laundry room... but maybe since your other accessories are already that color something with more contrast would be better? Maybe the grey is the perfect solution! Swoony accessories, by the way. I love that drying rack!

  6. I really like the shower curtain you picked for your sons bathroom. The towels are adorable - I'm partial to the second set. I am going to check out Dash and Albert. Thanks for sharing.

  8. I love your ideas, and I think a shade of 'rainy day gray' (<- not an actual color I'm sure, but it sounds good, eh?) will make those blues in your laundry room just pop right out. Also love the idea for the baby's bathroom. Where did you find that curtain? I really need to get a new one, and I was looking for a neutral ticking...

  9. Laudry Rooms are so boring but I am certain your will be the cutest on the block.
I say paint it NAVY blue with baby blue and turquoise cabinets. Cute no?

OR do Baby's bathroom navy with turquoise,a light green and baby blue cabinets.

That shower curtain is the bedding I want for our master. I have seen it in shower curtains and pillows but can't seem to find the bedding!!!

    LOVE IT!!!

  10. You sound like me! ;) LOL! I have SO many ideas and things that I want to do to our house. Since we'll be here for a while, I'll probably have the time to get my act together and get them all done. I'm totally with you on the carpet, too. We also have the "builder grade" which I hate. No matter how many times you shampoo it, it still looks terrible. Good luck on all your projects. I know they will turn out fab! ;)

  12. I personally love staircases without carpet that are painted. It will be stunning when you get it done! I also love the bathroom ideas you have! I'm thinking about redoing my kids' bathroom, but I have a boy & a girl so I need to still do some thinking on that one :) Can't wait to see the finished look!

  14. where did you get the stripe blue white curtain?

  15. I love the runner for your stairs. We have done the same thing on our stairs but with plain sisal. The striped ones are very popular here in the U.K., as well. They look lovely whn they are down. I think that you have great plans and I hope that we see your progression as you do the rooms. XXXX

  16. Hi, I love the - love the one your with sentiment. And my friend sent me a quote that says basically the same thing:
Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you have now was once among the things you only hoped for.

  18. Great ideas! How will you hook the dash and albert runner on your stairs? will you use those little metal rods?

  19. I can't wait to see how it all looks when you're finished! Thanks for the tip on Dash and Albert. I need lots of rugs right now!

Can't wait to see what you do to your laundry room. I'm having the same problem right now. Just bought a wooden shelf to hang, but can't seem to find any cute, metal bins that will fit on top of the shelf.

  20. Love that ironing board cover! I swear I have that same fabric in a table cloth!

  21. I think your stairs will turn out great! I hate our stairs - the stairwell? - is so dark. And it is carpeted in very expensive - but very not my style - carpet. Bleh.

I adore your drying rack and the ironing board cover..do you actually iron? I own an iron but I don't think I have ever used it to iron any clothes. LOL Anyway..I have a decent sized laundry "nook" that is enclosed behind shutter-style doors in our bathroom and I have been wanting to paint the nook a really fun colour. Our bathroom is a nice light sage-grey? Very soothing and understated and I would love a burst of unexpected colour when I open the laundry "room" doors.

  22. You're going to be busy!
Good call on the stair carpet, I'll never understand why builders think a nice pale beige is a good color for a high traffic area like stairs.

Super cute ironing board cover, thanks for calling my attention to that caaaa-ute Etsy shop!

  24. Nice ideas. I have one of those wall mounted clothes drying racks for decoration. But since I don't have a clothes dryer I have a couple big round ones that I use almost daily.
